About Me
Hi, my name is Kyra Kemp!
Hi, my name is Kyra Kemp, I’m from Chichester and I’m currently studying BSc (Hons) in Canine Therapy at Writtle University. After GCSEs, I completed my A levels in biology, geography, psychology and photography, working towards my goal of going to university. Once qualified, I would like to further my knowledge in behaviour and nutrition.
Growing up, I have been surrounded by animals, from a young age I always wanted to work in the veterinary profession. When I was 4, my dream job was to be a vet. This passion has stayed with me. When I was 10, watching ‘The Supervet’, it fascinated me how every patient is different and how a unique treatment plan is created for each one. This is what sparked my interest in canine therapy.
I have competed in agility with my 4 dogs for 6 years. During this time, I have witnessed many different injuries caused by repetitive jump landings, stop contacts, fast acceleration, braking, weaving, and sharp turns. These can cause muscle strains in the neck, back or legs and also put excessive strain on the shoulders which in some cases leads to medial shoulder instability. Some movements can cause slipping and twisting which may lead to overstretching or recurring strain. If these injuries occur, massage therapy targeting the specific areas can lead to stronger muscles and more flexible joints. Senior dogs are more likely to suffer from osteoarthritis, tendon injuries and hip/ elbow dysplasia. I found that by taking my elderly dog to hydrotherapy and doing intervals on the underwater treadmill, he was able to restore muscle strength and improve stability.
